Long ago in a land far away, Railtrack commissioned Design Research Unit to implement a full redesign of the archaic directional and statutory signage across the UK's twelve major stations. I was a junior designer thrown in at the deep end, and fortunate to be part of a small team conceiving and implementing a massive project back in 1998.

A modular system was developed to allow effective execution despite the complexity of the task. By simplifying elements into directional arrows, iconography, and written text, detailed sign schedules could be authored, and along with plan instructions based on architectural drawings, provided to sign manufacturers to build and install.
